MATT WARMAN MP CALLS FOR FARMLAND FLOOD PROTECTIONS

Matt Warman, MP for Boston and Skegness, yesterday called for the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Elizabeth Truss MP, to consider the value of farmland as well as homes when protecting against floods.

In the Chamber, Matt said “It is of course right that we protect homes above farmland. But can I ask the Secretary of State that we consider that the value of that farmland is often what powers local economies, and that we try to get that balance as adequate as possible to ensure we protect both the economy and houses?”

The Secretary of State thanked Matt for his question and confirmed that, under the Department’s six year plan, the Government will be protecting more farmland. Over the next five years, an additional million acres of farmland will be protected.

Matt said “I am pleased that the Government has committed to protecting more farmland from flooding. Agricultural land is the driving force of many local economies around the country, and in areas such as Boston and Skegness, is essential that it is protected alongside homes and other local businesses. But I will continue to press for farmland and homes to be valued appropriately, to ensure we preserve the unique character of the Lincolnshire countryside.”
