Matt Warman MP has hosted the inaugural Parliamentary reception of the National Association of Secondary Moderns, with guest speaker the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP. Organised by Ian Widdows, Head at The Giles Academy, the reception marks the first time the Association has received Cabinet-level support in Westminster.

The afternoon tea reception, on 27th April on the House of Commons Terrace, was attended by headteachers and chairs governors from across the country, who are members of the National Association of Secondary Moderns – an organisation set up to represent the interests of Secondary Modern schools, which are non-selective schools in areas which still have Grammar Schools. NASM is led by the Giles Academy in Old Leake.

Guest speaker Education Secretary Nicky Morgan MP praised the work that comprehensive schools do in stretching pupils of all abilities, and highlighted that some of the best of these schools are in selective areas.

Matt said, “I was delighted to host this reception and to welcome the Education Secretary to speak. It is important to recognise the valuable contribution of Secondary Moderns to the education of many children across Lincolnshire and beyond, so it was a pleasure to assist the NASM in hosting their reception. I am delighted that this fantastic organisation is run from my constituency, and look forward to continuing to work with them in future.”

Ian Widdows, NASM Chair and Giles Academy Headteacher, added, “On behalf of the National Association of Secondary Moderns I would like to thank Matt Warman for helping to organise such a landmark event for our organisation. Hearing the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, speak about the work that Secondary Moderns do signifies a huge step forward for us. I would add that celebrating the work of our schools in such an impressive setting gave us the best possible start to what was an incredibly successful National Conference.”
